During the world war, The chicago’s Salvation army created this event in 1938, to honor those people who served Doughnut to the soldiers of The salvation army during world war-1. Rumors said that a man Hanson Gregory invented the name Doughnut, out of a distaste for the under cooked centers and greasiness of the existing shapes and options. The shape was said to be obtained by punching a hole in the center with a tin pepper box.
